"The Departed" Reigns Supreme at Oscars!

The Departed picked up 4 Academy Awards on Sunday, including the coveted Best Picture prize. This year's Best Picture race was completely unpredictable with three films in major contention for the prize. Babel, which defeated the latter at the Golden Globes, lost the Best Picture prize, but did win the Best Original Score Oscar and Little Miss Sunshine wons awards for Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay. The Departed also picked up wins in Best Editing, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Director for seven-time loser Martin Scorsese.



Forest Whitaker and Helen Mirren continued their "reign" over award season as the two favorites picked up the Best Actor and Best Actress trophies. Forest Whitaker beat out long-time nominee Peter O'Toole for his performance as Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland. Helen Mirren also picked up her much anticipated Oscar, beating out Meryl Streep for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen.



In a suprise win, Alan Arkin picked up the Best Supporting Actor trophie, beating out favorite to win Eddie Murphy for his role as Grandpa in Little Miss Sunshine. Jennifer Hudson also caps off the award season adding an Oscar to her awards shelf beating out Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikcuchi for her debut performance as Effie White in Dreamgirls.

Pan's Labyrinth won three Oscars for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Makeup. Marie Antoinette won an Oscar for their period-style costumes in Best Costume Design. An Inconvenient Truth picked up two Oscars for Best Documentary and Best Original Song for "I Need To Wake Up" sung by Melissa Etheridge.

Dreamgirls also won for Best Sound, Letters from Iwo Jima won for Best Sound Editing, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest won for Best Visual Effects and Happy Feet took home Best Animated Picture.
