Oscar Proves to Be Not So Predictable After All

In an almost completely predictable night, the 2006 Academy Awards ended with a BANG when Crash, the film about characters of different racial backgrounds who collide in one incident and the different stereotypes society has created for those backgrounds affecting their judgment, beliefs and actions, which in turn causes problems for each of them, took home the top prize at last night's show defeating the frontrunner Brokeback Mountain. Crash also won Oscars for Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing.

As many had predicted before the Oscar ceremony, Philip Seymour Hoffman took home the Best Lead Actor trophy for his portrayal of Truman Capote in Capote defeating Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger. Reese Witherspoon won her first Academy Award in the Best Lead Actress category for her portrayal of country singer June Carter in Walk the Line beating out Felicity Huffman in Transamerica.

Proving that television amuni can go on to film success, George Clooney accepted the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Bob Barnes in Syriana beating out SAG favorite Paul Giamatti of Cinderella Man and BAFTA winner Jake Gyllenhaal for Brokeback Mountain. A pregnant, but glowing Rachel Weisz won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal as Tessa Quayle in The Constant Gardener defeating critic's favorite Amy Adams for Junebug and breakthrough darling Michelle Williams for, once again, Brokeback Mountain.

Brokeback Mountain didn't leave empty handed last night, winning Best Original Score, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Director for Ang Lee. Other big winners included Memoirs of a Geisha which took home three trophies for Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, and Best Art Direction. King Kong was also a triple threat last night, winning Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

In a suprise win, rap group Three 6 Mafia won an Academy Award, beating out favorite Dolly Parton, for Best Original Song for "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" from Hustle & Flow. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe took home Best Makeup, while Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit won Best Animated Feature.
